Experience: I conducted my dissertation on the design of a UAS landing gear for the 2018 UAS challenge. With a strong mechanical background and experience of product design/development within the medical industry, I strive to utilise my varied skillset to lead a talented group of engineers to produce a professional fixed-wing drone.

Team Ambitions: Successfully design and manufacture the first fixed-wing configuration drone University of Huddersfield will have entered into the IMechE UAS challenge. I also aim to drive both the Harrier HAWK and the Sparrow HAWK teams towards podium positions at the 2019 fly-off event.

Three Interesting Facts: I have previously developed a range of earthing devices which are now utilised in medical locations worldwide, keeping medical staff and patients safe from fault currents.
I have competed at the British Bouldering Championships on several occasions alongside world-class professional athletes.
I drink more coffee than any other member of the team.

Experience: I have worked closely with power generating systems in the chemical and nuclear industry, but have also studied the characteristics and control theory of a new hybrid rotor concept for large industrial wind generators. Having had exposure to a variety of motor sizes, models and sources of power albeit on a large scale, I am eager to implement this knowledge on a smaller scale within a multidisciplinary team of engineers.

Team Ambitions: Develop and manufacture the electrical and electronic functionalities of the fixed-wing drone designs in conjunction with the mechanical and management teams involved in the project.

Three Interesting Facts: Keen cyclist, runner and swimmer.
Competitive Badminton player, have represented the University and Warwickshire county on numerous occasions.
Regularly go out hiking. Favourite places include the Peaks, Lakes, Snowdonia and when possible Scotland’s Ballachulish Highlands.

Experience: I have experience in project management and budgeting from my previous job, as well as making a decent brew. I have been studying engineering to MEng level and have a working knowledge of electrical systems.

Team Ambitions: Our team ambition this year is to develop, build and compete with a second design based on a fixed wing aircraft. We hope to have a competitive creation that can build on last year’s success.

Three Interesting Facts: I used to travel the country as a telecoms engineer, doing everything from installations to surveys. Completed Total Warrior 2018. Tallest member of the team.

Experience: Studying energy engineering gives me experience in both mechanical and electrical disciplines. I have several months project engineering experience which allows me to have an insight into how to plan and execute major projects.

Team Ambitions: For the team to create a fixed wing entry into the IMechE challenge, which has been effectively designed and thoroughly tested. Want to provide an effective base for future teams to develop and improve on our design and to allow Team HAWK to move from strength to strength in future years.

Three Interesting Facts: I enjoy following sports and am an enthusiastic fan of Manchester United.
I set myself the goal a few years ago of learning the Polish language by interacting with native speakers rather than studying books or undertaking lessons, I can now speak Polish to a basic level. For my dissertation I was required to analyse the performance of a solar thermal hot water heating system in use in temperate regions of Europe.

Experience: Currently studying mechanical engineering, but have experience in both mechanical and electrical engineering fields. I have been in and lead multiple engineering projects which incorporate both electrical and mechanical disciplines along with personal projects to greater improve my expertise.

Team Ambitions: Our team’s ambitions are to enter a fixed-wing drone into the IMechE challenge. This is the first year of the fixed-wing’s development and we aim to thoroughly test our design to have a good standing in the challenge. We hope to leave a good final design for future teams to further develop our drone bringing it to greater heights.

Three Interesting Facts: Fully designed an automated indoor herb garden which would grow various fruits and vegetables with no interactions needed for as long as 2 months. Space exploration enthusiast. Enjoy walking around my local area.

Experience: Industrial experience in UTC Aerospace, as a hydromechanical engineer. Investigating and testing control units for commercial and military aircraft engines. Involved within the companies REAC (Regulations Evaluations and Authorization of Chemicals) committee, overseeing all chemicals of concern for EU regulation. Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) experience from my final year project, based on the take-off simulation of a Lockheed Martin F-22Raptor.

Team Ambitions:Accomplish the first high performance fixed-wing drone design in the University of Huddersfield creating a strong foundation for optimisation for future teams. Aim to win the overall competition with ‘flying’ colours.

Three Interesting Facts: Keen Skier. Awarded medal for 10 years of alter serving in mass. Went to High School in Melbourne, Australia.

Experience: Working with 3M, I produced a dissertation on surface metrology to develop useful techniques on defining the scratch origination on a surface. I have a lot of experience on testing surface finishes and hope to use this knowledge when manufacturing the flight surfaces.

Team Ambitions: To design, develop and build a innovative drone flight control system. Looking forward to the competition day when all our efforts results in a drone that dances in the air, completing all the tasks like nothing you’ve seen before.

Three Interesting Facts: I have unique behaviour, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which makes me always push myself to work perfectly no matter how big the challenge is.
A foreigner who always tries the best to speak like an Englishman. For me, English is kind of posh language!
Not a fan of playing games on PC, phone or PlayStation.

Experience: Have a good understanding of mechanical systems through studying my course and have work experience in construction. I have also visited companies working on innovative renewable energy sources which is something I want to get involved with after graduating.

Team Ambitions: To design an exemplary fixed-wing drone on which following years team develop upon. It’s the first time that a fixed-wing drone will be designed at the University of Huddersfield and I am excited to be part of the first generation.

Three Interesting Facts: I enjoy watching and playing football and have been awarded medals in multiple competitions. I like experiencing adrenaline rushes and often take part in adventures that can be dangerous. I take delight in the simple pleasures.

Experience: I have valuable experience using SolidWorks to design parts and assemblies which I will apply to design the payload deployment mechanism. I also have a background in product design which I believe will help our team get our fixed-wing design concept to a flight ready aircraft.

Team Ambitions: To successfully design & manufacture the first fixed-wing drone for the University of Huddersfield and give future Team HAWK teams a strong foundation to improve from. Also aiming to help the team gain a podium finish in the UAS Challenge 2019.

Three Interesting Facts: I have previously designed, developed & manufactured a full screw conveyor used for a company in Wales that is able to break up clusters of oysters & mussels.I really enjoy watching football and following my team Manchester City. I completed my dissertation on developing a test that could simulate the fretting wear that occurs between bone cement and stainless steel femoral stems used in hip replacements.

Experience: I have been studying engineering the last five years gaining valuable experience through both group and individual projects. I also have three summers worth of work experience in manufacturing from a factory in Cyprus. Working along side my studies has allowed me to apply theoretical concepts into industrial practises.

Team Ambitions: This year will be the first for the University of Huddersfield to compete with a fixed-wing drone in the UAS Challenge. My ambitions for the team is to create, design and build a fixed-wing drone which can successfully complete all the challenges set by the IMechE.

Team Ambitions: To successfully design, manufacture and build a drone capable of coming 1st in the IMechE UAS Challenge and to organise, plan and keep on track Team HAWK and deliver two fantastic drones at the fly-off event.

Three Interesting Facts: I’m an avid sports fan, supporting Manchester United and Lancashire Lightning.
I love traveling and have visited over a dozen countries in Europe and Africa and plan to visit Asia.
I’ve probably watched all the sitcoms of Netflix.

Experience: I have worked on various areas of the electronic engine control unit for a jet engine business, helping to develop the project from early design phase to initial hardware. I have experience working as part of a similarly sized multidisciplinary team and understand the importance of good communication as well as being able to undertake leadership responsibilities when necessary. Throughout university I have studied various motor typologies and motor drive circuity, control theory, embedded systems, and learned the required practical skills to transfer theoretical circuit design to hardware.

Team Ambitions: To work as part of a successful team which develops a robust, efficient, and innovative drone to achieve a high-ranking position in the IMechE challenge.

Three Interesting Facts: I’m a Formula 1 fan and aspire to work in the automotive industry as an electronic/electrical engineer.
I enjoy cooking (especially Italian). I learned to play the violin up until grade 7.

Experience: I have many years’ of experience working for Stelram Engineering Ltd. in the automation industry. I have been involved in many of the company’s projects; developing electrical circuit diagrams, PLC/ HMI programs and commissioning machines on site. At University I have studied many aspects of control theory, high power electrical systems and core electronic design theory. I hope to apply my knowledge to the construction of the drone.
Team Ambitions: To build, develop and pilot a highly competitive drone making a strong foundation for future teams. I would also like utilise my PIC microcontroller skills and the teams innovative thinking to produce an excellent failsafe salvage system.

Three Interesting Facts: I was originally born in South Africa. Regularly attend DW gym working on strength and fitness to prepare for Tough Mudder events supporting Cancer Research UK, Help for Heroes and Papyrus. Like working on home electronics projects to improve my coding and PCB skills. I am currently looking at methods to automate simple tasks in the home.

Experience: Part of the propulsion sub-team in the previous year. My duties consisted of research and design of a cowling section to improve propeller efficiency. Having a background in machine maintenance I know the importance of physical testing and am familiar with many different testing techniques. I will apply my knowledge to ensure that the Harrier HAWK components are fit for their purpose.
Team Ambitions: As the Harrier HAWK team already has had success in previous years, winning airworthiness in 2017 and overall 3rd in 2018; we aim to use modern techniques to refine our design increasing its performance and capability’s.

Three Interesting Facts: Worked as a machine mechanic in the print industry for three years before attending university. Keen hiker and have completed a two-week wild camping tour of Scotland in 2018. Always been interested in the aerospace industry and have had the opportunity to work airside with many international airports for company’s such as Jet 2 and aim to obtain a light aircraft licence in the future.

Experience: Currently studying mechanical engineering, I have gained experience in both mechanical and electrical engineering from modules covered during the duration of my course. Also have a greater understanding of design analysis principles and how they are applied in real life situations.

Team Ambitions: Our team’s ambition is to optimise on last year drone for the IMechE challenge, with this going to be a third generation drone we are planning on drastically improving the overall design of the drone to improve on the third place finish of last year.

Three Interesting Facts: I fully designed an integrated power generation system which could harness power from the waste water collected in a hotel. The power generate could sustain the whole building. Train, construction and renewable engineering enthusiast. Enjoy playing football and keeping fit.

Experience: Achieved a first class degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Huddersfield where I researched into propeller design for inland waterways craft to reduce cavitation. Also have some experience in product design for the glass industry.

Team Ambitions: To build a propulsion system that can achieve the same level of thrust as previous years whilst reducing the power/current draw from the battery. I’d also like to incorporate more advanced propeller designs.

Three Interesting Facts: I have been playing tennis for over 12 years and still play for my local club in the North Kent Men’s League 1 competition every year. I have started building a track car out of an e36 323i and plan on attending at least 2 track days in 2019. I dabble in fixing electronic systems at home.

Team Ambitions: To win the competition obviously! And to design a landing gear capable of keeping the drone safe in the event of a heavy crash landing.

Three Interesting Facts: I’m currently team leader of HudRail as well as doing Team HAWK. Needless to say, I’m quite busy at the moment! I was once a semi-professional magician. I was a coin toss away from being named after Eric Cantona, luckily, I got named after Ryan Giggs (no offence to the Eric’s of the world). My family and I are passionate Manchester United fans if you can’t tell.

Team Ambitions: To improve on the design of last year’s entry to the UAS Challenge. To include an appropriately designed release mechanism with a speed retarding system capable of allowing multiple targeted payload drops whilst eliminating fall damage.

Three Interesting Facts: As an avid motorsport fan I have attended four Formula 1 Grand Prix’s including the British and Belgian GP as well as the World Endurance Championship 6 hours of Silverstone race. I am an expert at making homemade pizza. I enjoy various driving experiences with the most recent learning to drive a range of Porsche’s in various driving conditions. I currently have a rally driving course booked.
